Color Me Creative

Ok, so all things being equal, I did my Black Friday shopping online.  And, I did it from the comfort of my warm home, in my pj’s without anyone brandishing a gun or picking a fight over products.  It’s definitely about what’s convenient for me in most cases.

Since we live what I consider to be far from civilization, heck me might as well leave on a plantation somewhere, going out into the dark of night to shop just isn’t appealing.  And, at the same time, cyber shopping is like a foreign language to my family.  They think I’m nuts.  Possibly I am nuts.

However, when they learned that I would be receiving a Ceiling Hung Christmas Tree this year from Amazon.com that I can unpack, have my husband mount it (somehow) and then pack it up and send it back, I jumped.  And, let me make sure you get this, I jumped really high!

I wanted this bad.  It should come in Wednesday and I will nag my husband until it is hanging nicely in the corner of the room, not taking up one square inch of floor space.  And, since it comes pre-lit, we may not even venture into the garage and fight the critters for our ornaments.  Just sit back and enjoy the uniqueness that is…….an upside down tree.

MRSA do what is smart and meet Grant Hill too

Here you can join the Bleacher Brigade and help educate others about MRSA

STOP MRSA Now and Grant Hill are asking parents, Booster Club supporters, individuals and communities to pledge their support to help prevent the spread of MRSA through the dissemination of information about MRSA prevention for the home and in community settings. Washing your hands, covering cuts and disinfecting surfaces with a bleach solution are just a few prevention tips.

If you have a child in school, regardless of their age, they are at risk for MRSA.  I want to make sure, my fellow educating friends know what to do and how to take care of your family.

The spread of MRSA into community settings makes it more important than ever to educate Americans about practical ways to help reduce the spread of the infection. To help, the STOP MRSA Now coalition and NBA all-star Grant Hill joined together with the North American Booster Club Association (NABCA) to launch the national "Bleacher Brigade" challenge to activate individuals and communities across the country to help prevent the spread of MRSA in community settings and at home.

The Facts can be found at Stop MRSA Now

and the glossary of terms are:

GLOSSARY

MRSA — stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is a type of Staph bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics.

Staph — a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin and in the nose. In most cases Staph lives in these areas of the body and does not cause infections. However, for unclear reasons, a small percentage of people develop Staph infections.

Carrier — a person who carries Staph or MRSA bacteria but do not have any symptoms. They can also transmit the bacteria to other people.

Antibiotic — a drug that fights infections caused by bacteria.

Antibiotic resistance — the ability of bacteria to resist the effects of an antibiotic.

So much for no school and no schedule

Ok, so after my mom and I almost had full-on strokes yesterday about noon, we returned to routine.  It was ugly.  My children like their routine and their parents and Nanny like it when they are on a routine because otherwise…they are like a banshee’s running wild!

Done!

Onward with the birthday boys weekend…..funny how my kid gets the whole weekend for his birthday when it’s on a holiday and the only think I ever got for being born on a holiday weekend was “you are getting clothes for school for your birthday"?  Humpf…look how adorable this kid is though, how can you stand the sweetness.

We are going to do the No School at my house this week

You heard that right.  I’ve mentioned a few times that we lead very ritualistic lives.  My kids go to bed early, they do everything basically the same.  Since at least one of them has been staying with my mom 3 nights a week, we’ve even perfected the routine for that as well.

But, the kiddo is out all week.  I broke down and let him go on the field trip although I couldn’t go.  Honestly, the kid was screeching like a banshee because he wanted to go.  His teacher said he was really good and watched the whole movie with eyes wide.

So, this week, we will read, because we always read and we always have, but we are throwing routines out the window, bedtime, bath time, dinner time, eh, who cares…it’s a week off.

Relates more to dress code than the thermostat

If you read my previous post, you know that we were told our schools would be setting their thermostats at 55.  That was later rectified and the number given to us was 72.  Who knows?  What happened to 68 being the universal temp?  Anyway, as I was thumbing through the student handbook because, even at 55 degree’s the dress code indicated that outerwear was to be removed upon entering the building.

That brought my attention to another spot in the dress code.  And, this one is probably not a bit of interest to anyone except those of us who have suffered.  One of the stipulations in the dress code is that outerwear is to be put in a locker or put away in the classroom. Ok, that’s fine.

But, then, there is an additional part of the dress code that says that students are not allowed to wear jackets and tie them around their waist.  Now, however, tacky I find that to be myself, I remember many days as a young girl who was experiencing the joys of womanhood at the early age of 9 and one who had very little idea how to handle the inadequate protection that I was willing to wear and/or carry in my purse for fear of someone finding it.  The answer, if you eventually stained your pants, you could put your jacket around your waist and wear it that way.

My parents both worked.  I didn’t have the option of calling them to take me home or bring me more clothes.  I was a 9 year old, expected to be an adult and when I failed, I at least had the reprieve of that jacket tied around my waist.

Now, what’s a girl to do?

Creditability Reigns – I Hope You See It For What It Is…

Earlier this week we received a letter from our school stating that the entire school district would be using energy efficient management techniques of some sort and that the thermostats on the inside of all school buildings would be set at 55 degrees.

Now, I have to admit, my first thought was that this was surely a typo.  I mean, had they sent a note home saying they would be setting the thermostats at 65, I would have raised my eyebrows and purchased my son a couple of extra sweatshirts.

But, as it is, the dress code reads that all outerwear is to be removed upon entering the building.  But, this note read that all students should come dressed for 55 degree temps inside and bring appropriate outerwear.

Now, let’s just say that I may or may not have freaked out.  But, here’s where I want you to see and understand that I don’t complain for the sake of complaining.  I don’t just sit around thinking up ways to a thorn in someone’s side.  The fact is, 55 degree’s is freaking cold.

My mother admonished me and told me to quit complaining about everything that went on at school.  I shook my head, remembering those days I was bullied in elementary school and the only thing she could ever say was “well what did you do to them?”.  I would not stay silent.

Now, again, my creditability reigns queen here in that I knew this was not his teacher’s decisions, nor that of his administrator.  I am smarter than that.  I worked here remember, I know how it all plays out.  But, while others were plotting their phone calls to the Board of Education the next morning, I took action that night.  I used my Facebook friend status with the board member that represents out school and asked about it.  He indicated then that he would make some calls the next morning and see what he could find out.  He emailed me back about an hour later to say that he had already made the phone calls and the situation would be corrected the next day.

And, the next day comes and the phones are ringing, my email is slamming and I too would just like to know what was going on.  Apparently someone that was hired to help the board budget expenses in the area of electrical bills suggested that the optimal temp for each school was 55 inside for the Board to save money.  My optimal thought was to fire the idiot and use his salary to pay the electric bill and at least set the thing on 65 or 68.

That last part, that’s not facts that I know, that’s just what I was told from other parents.  All I know is that I notified my local TV Station which by the way isn’t very local (about 90 miles) and asked that if something wasn’t done on this matter asap, I would like to see them intervene.

On Friday, we received a note stating that the temperature inside the buildings would be set at 72.

Ok, so back to where I’m trying to show everyone involved that I am not just a griping parent with nothing to do.  I know the guidelines, I had to close my daycare if it got below 64 or 65 and they were asking to set it at 55?  I knew it wasn’t my son’s teacher.  I knew it wasn’t my son’s principal, I Knew where the decisions were being made and I went to that source.

I hope that by reading this, the teachers and administrators realize that if I come to them with a problem, I truly feel as if it is something they can handle.  But, if I know that such is not the case, then absolutely, I know better than bug someone who has no control.

Now, tell me, would you be happy if your child’s school was setting the temp in the building at 55 and then requiring them to remove all outerwear upon entering the building?

Just curious?
