Kaplan Tutoring for My Babies

Posted on Oct 25, 2010 10:58:31 AM

Yes, I know, technically it doesn’t seem that babies would need tutoring. That’s funny because they are 5 and 7 but they are my babies.  You understand that part, right?

I am going to tell you all a secret. My youngest child is struggling. Jace is 5 and it’s hard to cope with the problems. And, as you all know, Walker who is 7 has always performed above his grade level and I thought it was hard.  I tried to make sure that you all knew that I understood how hard it was to have a child that struggles. And, now I know for myself.

He is left handed. He is writing from right to left sometimes but that is coming along slowly. The problem is this, he is struggling with even sight words from the first of the school year. Hopefully we can keep working with him and for now he has bee moved to the lowest reading group in his class.  He loves it because he does struggle with self-confidence and his teacher noticed that he would rather just not answer then to guess or sound out a word and be wrong.

In this lower group, he is able to get some of that confidence back and hopefully move back up before long. He didn’t recognize the move as a move down so I’m ok with that. He did say that he got to go work with the teacher extra after lunch. She told me she did that with that particular reading group.

She thought she might be moving to fast. And I burst into tears. He was ecstatic about the move and how he had beat everyone at the matching game they played in the reading group with sight words.  And I burst into tears again.

That said, we are going to use Kaplan Tutoring to help him as much as possible.  Both of the boys have wanted to play on the computer for quite a while but we disassembled  to move furniture and we are just now getting it back up and running with all the safety precautions on it.

So, follow along please as I take myself and both boys through the learning process of Kaplan Tutoring

Here’s some technical information about how the program works and please feel free to make suggestions on how I can help my little ones as well as what you think of Kaplan Tutoring.

How It Works: Smart Track

The Online Learning Program is driven by Kaplan’s exclusive Smart Track system. Smart Track creates a personalized learning plan for your child that continually adapts through these 4 steps:
1.    Assess: Your child starts with math and reading assessments to determine current skill levels. It is critical that your child completes these assessments independently to provide an accurate picture of your child’s skill levels.
Tip: During assessments, Smart Track will not tell your child if answers are right or wrong – don’t worry! Smart Track will teach any skills your child does not understand in online lessons.

2.    Teach: Next, your child enters interactive lessons that teach new skills, provide guided practice, then ask your child to demonstrate mastery through independent practice questions.
Tip: Smart Track remembers where lessons end when your child logs off, so your child can log in for as little as 20 minutes each session and still benefit! No matter how you choose to schedule online sessions, we recommend at least 2 hours of online learning each week.

3.    Motivate: In addition to the fun characters in online lessons, the time your child spends working online also earns points to redeem in our popular online Reward Zone.
Tip: Your child starts off with 100 points to use in the Reward Zone. Browse rewards with your child and have your child select a few reward goals. Having a goal in mind helps kids stay motivated to complete assessments and lessons.

4.    Adapt: After your child masters new skills, Smart Track will provide another assessment to customize the next lessons your child sees based on current skill levels.
