SAN JOSE, CA December 23, 2009— Having trouble deciding what resolutions to make for New Year's? A new web site, LifeHints.com, makes it easy.
Unlike other web sites which answer questions you already know to ask, LifeHints gives you hints for your life (family, household, finance, etc) ... even before you know you need them. For example, LifeHints may suggest establishing a 529 fund for your children's college education, putting your antiperspirant on at night, or simply getting the "Down Low Glow" for your bicycle. LifeHints makes these suggestions based on whatever you have told it about yourself, and what the recommendation engine has found that other people like you appreciate.
During the beta period, the service can offer some amusing recommendations: getting your colors "done" for a person with no interest in fashion, protecting your home computer network for a household with only 1 computer, and so on. It's all in good fun, though, and makes for interesting reading. And if you really don't like a hint, you can "banish" it so that LifeHints will never show it to you again. In addition to the core hints, LifeHints also supports user-generated content so you can add your own ideas to the hint database, as well as improving any hint via a wiki style.
LifeHints also supports Facebook integration, so if you have a Facebook account you can "connect" at the push of a button, see which hints your friends have recently recommended or completed, and even "assign" hints to your friends (for example, "Cure Your Bad Breath").
The service is free, and while the backers plan to add algorithmically-chosen advertising alongside the hints at some point in the future, for now the focus is on making the user experience as fun and as helpful as possible.
