Educating the World – One Person at a Time

Morgan Freeman said…and why we should listen

MyPoints
Morgan Freeman grew up in Mississippi, in case you didn’t know.  And, if you aren’t from the south, you may not know that Alabama* and Mississippi** schools are kind of like the armpits of education.  No one that I know that lives in Alabama is willing to move to Mississippi and education is part of the reason.

I’m not big on charity shows.  And, if you read my post about being a bit miffed by the folks who were making a big deal over Haiti when they never make a big deal of our country, our own children and education, you know where I stand on this issue.  With that, I had planned to skip tonight’s episode of American Idol and Idol Gives Back.  As I said, I’m not big on charity shows.

However, this is about helping folks in our own nation.  Not just helping folks in other places, but helping educate our children.  Save the Children Literacy Program is just one of the programs being discussed.

Morgan Freeman and Randy Jackson are pushing physical education along with literacy.  Morgan Freeman said, “Literacy is a ladder out, but we have to be fit enough to climb.”

Wow, read that again…

Literacy is a ladder out, but we have to be fit enough to climb.

Ok, Idol, you won me over with this one.  Who would have ever thunk it?

1-877-IDOL-AID is the number for giving!

*Alabama ranks 46th in Teacher Quality, Education Input, and Education Social Impact and 35th in Education Output and we aren’t ranked at all in Education Efficiency

**Mississippi ranks 27th in Teacher Quality and not at all in the other areas.

Another site ranks Alabama as being 45th overall in education and Mississippi comes in at a whopping 48.  That leaves only Nevada at 49 and Arizona at 50.  That is a 2006-2007 ranking by the way.

I saw this too. In fact I’m watching the show right now. Morgan Freeman’s quote stuck with me also. Besides focusing on the physical fitness aspect, we need to consider nutritious food for our children. If they’re hungry or hyper from sugary foods (if that bothers them) they’re not going to learn.

    Ditto That!

  3. Naomi Said,

The biggest thing I learned at the NFCL conference was the importance of family modeling good literacy behavior, which really includes EVERYTHING about learning including fitness and nutrition as well as reading and other academics. It’s the whole package and I think it’s easy for people to forget that.

It is hard, people get hung up on specialty areas and forget the big picture.
