When To Say When
Posted on March 02nd, 2010 in Featured education
I know that I’ve beat this horse quite a few times around here and today I’m going to beat it from the other side.
Homework?
When do you quit prodding the child, pushing the kid, cradling him and helping him with his homework?
When do you say “you’re on your own kid!”
Is first grade too young?
Is seven too young?
I need help here…what do you think?

I think it depends entirely on context. Are they really confused and a simple bit of clarification will move them forward? Help them! (even if they’re in college) Learning is far more important than “going at it alone.”
But if they’re just dragging and whatnot, perhaps it’s time to let them stew…

What I’m hearing is not that you need to help them with their homework so much as needing to help them focus on their homework, so that’s what I’ll answer….
For boys, you need to help them focus most of the way through middle school. They are not meant for sitting and drilling (generally speaking) and so they need a lot of guidance to keep them on task when the task is not one they want to accomplish.
As for actual help on specific problems, I wouldn’t do the work, but I’d certainly supervise, interact, encourage, and help when needed.

hmmmm… we aren’t quite at that point, but it sounds like the frustration may be his lack of interest. Is there something that could motivate him to just “get it done”? I’m thinking TV time or M&Ms… some little and tangible reward.
