Educationally Challenged: The Parents That Is

That’s probably not too funny and I know we’ve discussed many times the difficulties of raising a gift child as well as raising a child with learning disorders. What I have on my hands here is simple…I just haven’t figured it out yet.
Let me try to explain, Walker is still a straight A student. Given, the first 9 weeks we had to take away some afternoon privileges to get him motivated to pull out an A in language but he did it. His teacher even said that this particular language series is difficult, so we are very proud that at week 5 of a 9 week grading period, he had an 82 and when we made him aware of this, he brought that grade up to a 91.
The second nine weeks have been more of the same. We’ve had to monitor a little closer but the kid whizzes through math and science like no body’s business. And, we’ve bought him a child’s version of the Kindle and he will get it for his birthday on Friday so this should be fun for everyone to see how it pans out.
Moving right along to adorable cherub number two. As far as I know, he has no idea what his ABC’s are, what the letters represent, how to identify each nor does he have a clue what any of his site words are. He has no concept of color and or how to write either. That’s what me, his mother knew about him. My own mother said he would do pages and pages of letters, recognizing both upper and lower case, telling him what sounds the letters made and the site words? Ha! He has me in a warped state of nonsense.
His teacher professed that we had nothing to worry about, I professed that he was failing kindergarten. He isn’t failing kindergarten at all. As a matter of fact, when I asked a reading teacher at another school to interpret his DIBELS scores, she laughed at me for thinking he knew nothing.
And, with that, we are one week into the first nine weeks of the second semester and the kids have gone to school 4 days. We’ve all been cooped up in the house since Saturday due to snow and who knows if the kids will even go back Thursday, never mind we haven’t even had a call for tomorrow.
So, I am going to rest a little easier, keep up a little better and quit worrying myself sick of what the kid knows or doesn’t know because apparently, the goal of the game is to keep me in the dark all the way around! Fun!
Now, get this white stuff out of here, I hate snow. Although, I have to admit, it’s been kind of fun just the four of us in the home with short periods outside to bombard one another with snow balls. But, if the electricity goes off, all bets are off and this is going to go south quick!
In the meantime, let’s see what we can teach the parents now instead of just the students.

I have learned so much, especially about our educational system, from my gifted son.
