Seagate Comes Through for an Educator

Seagate

When Seagate does something for you, they do it up right.  I was asked by a teacher to request a portable drive from someone as a project on Donors Choose

Seagate came through with the portable drive and because of the nature that we would like to use the drive (we meaning me and the teachers need to exchange photos for me to upload to Donors Choose), I got a docking station for her.  Here she is, tell me this woman is not happier than those pigs in slop down in my front yard?

2011MomCongressHORIZ_TEST

It all started simple enough.  I was helping teachers just like I’ve done for the last three years.  Since I decided that teaching wasn’t for me, I’ve tried to do my best to see that teachers get the funds and/or equipment they need.  I had no idea it could bloom into something as special as being the Alabama delegate to Mom Congress for Parenting Magazine.  If you knew how excited I was, you’d squeal too.

And, for those of you who haven’t been keeping up, Donors Choose is helping the teachers every which way you can think of.  They have absolutely gone beyond my wildest expectations.  Seagate and Kodak stepped in to help with some equipment as well and now, I have a chance to spread the world nationally about Mom Congress, Parenting Magazine, teachers in need of funds, Donors Choose.

So, proudly I give you, the official press release.  Don’t miss a word!  Please by all means, just read it for me!

NAUVOO MOM WINS TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C. TO REPRESENT ALABAMA

AT PARENTING MAGAZINE’S

MOM CONGRESS ON EDUCATION AND LEARNING® CONFERENCE

JERRI ANN HEAD REASON TO JOIN PARENTING, U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

ARNE DUNCAN, AND ONE OUTSTANDING MOM EDUCATION ADVOCATE FROM EVERY STATE AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY APRIL 10-13, 2011

Nauvoo, Alabama, February 21, 2011 – Parenting magazine today announced that Jerri Ann Head Reason of Nauvoo has been selected to represent Alabama at the second-annual Mom Congress on Education and Learning® conference at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. this April 10th through 13th. Jerri Ann was chosen for her outstanding contributions and dedication to improving local schools. A total of fifty-one moms, representing each state and the District of Columbia, have been selected by Parenting as Mom Congress delegates.

For the second year in a row, Parenting selected each delegate from applications submitted through Parenting.com. Each will receive round-trip airfare, a three-night hotel stay, and the opportunity to connect with other moms from across the country to share success stories, challenges, and concerns as they work to improve our nation’s schools.

“It is such an honor to be chosen to join such an amazing group of women,” says Jerri Ann of her excitement to be a part of Mom Congress. “I’m elated and certainly hope to serve as a source of pride for Alabama.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan headlines the roster of education and advocacy leaders scheduled to address the delegates at the conference. On Tuesday, April 12th, Secretary Duncan will speak to attendees about the crucial role that parents play in helping implement the national agenda for improving the country’s school system and the educational opportunities available to our nation’s children. Other organizations scheduled to appear include First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, Students First.org, Reach Out and Read, the National PTA, National Education Association, Headstart, PBS, and NBC Learn.

Throughout their time at the conference, the Mom Congress delegates will work closely with Parenting editors to shape the magazine’s editorial coverage to better inform and empower parents nationwide to get involved in their children’s education. Faculty members from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies – the Mom Congress educational provider – will also lead sessions during the event, and will offer scholarships for Mom Congress courses to 10 outstanding mom advocates per semester.

KinderCare, as a sponsor of the 2011 Mom Congress conference, will help raise the awareness of the critical role early childhood education plays in preparing young children for success in school through a panel discussion of leading experts and a breakout session with delegates led by Dr. Elanna Yalow, Mom Congress Advisory Board Member and Executive Vice President at Knowledge Universe, the parent company of KinderCare. During the event, KinderCare will also highlight the importance of early literacy by making a donation of 20 books for each delegate to a national reading organization while also providing its “Today I Will Read a Book” guide to reading to all Mom Congress attendees.

Driven by the ever-increasing role that parents play in advocating for positive change in the education system, Parenting magazine launched the Mom Congress initiative in March 2009 to celebrate and connect moms fighting for better schools. Each month, the School Years edition of Parenting gives readers the education news and resources they need to make a difference, and highlights the efforts of some of its 21,000+ Mom Congress members who have brought about positive change for students.

At the inaugural conference last May, 51 delegates met on the campus of Georgetown University to work with Parenting editors, Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies faculty and the Mom Congress advisory board to create the “Lesson Plan for Change”, a blueprint to empower parents to get more involved in their children’s education that appeared in the October 2010 issue of Parenting School Years and in the bestselling companion guide to the documentary Waiting for Superman.
